Brief

Our clients wished to reconfigure the ground floor of their two storey Victorian villa in the Grange Conservation Area to create a new open plan family room with kitchen and dining areas adjacent and with direct access to the large rear garden.

It was important to our clients that the new extension should blend, rather than contrast, with the form and material of the main house and they were keen to maximise daylighting to the interior and views out. In addition they required a new utility room, shower room and study at ground floor and an enhanced family bathroom on the first floor.

Proposals

Firstly, a clutter of inefficient rooms and storage spaces to the rear of the property are to be cleared away as well as large portions of the rear facade in order to open the interior to the garden. Then a new extension is to be added in the form of a stone extrusion to the former utility wing, which is to be constructed using stone salvaged from the facade demolitions. A sleek glass portal extends the interior space into the garden and mimics the form of the traditional Victorian bay windows to the front. These create a new axis through the centre of the house which is accentuated by two new internal double-door openings which allow a clear line of sight from the front to the rear garden and bring additional beneficial daylight into the central dark hallway corridor.

Two large format rooflights, together with two new sliding glass doorsets flood the interior with daylight.

The use of reclaimed stone achieves the client’s desire to create a seamless blend of materials to harmonise with the main house, while the clean lines of the new glazed components and slim metal frames add a clean contemporary refinement.
