Brief
The site, built around 1823, forms part of the Category A listing for Claremont Crescent and until recently operated as a hotel. Our clients acquired the property with the aim of sympathetically restoring and enhancing the existing buildings, removing the mid C20th rear toilet block that blemished the dramatic expanse of the crescent’s rear facade, and replacing it with contemporary extensions that complement the historic buildings.
Proposals
Our design restores the elegance and proportions of these historic townhouses while accommodating contemporary living. Unsympathetic alterations are removed, principal rooms are reinstated, and spaces are thoughtfully allocated for modern use. The mid-20th-century rear extension is replaced with a refined, stone-clad contemporary addition, creating light-filled living areas. Garden-level flats gain direct access to the private gardens, while surviving period features, including cornices and ceiling roses, are carefully repaired or reinstated, harmonising heritage with modern comfort.
