Brief
The client’s brief sought to unlock the full potential of the site by introducing additional housing within the generous rear gardens of the listed townhouses. The aim was to enhance the overall value of the property while making considered use of under-utilised space. Crucially, the brief required that any new development preserve the privacy, outlook, and architectural setting of both the existing townhouses and their gardens. Our response balances these requirements through sensitive siting, refined massing, and a respectful relationship to the historic crescent.
Proposals
Our design introduces two mews style houses that respond sensitively to the sweeping crescent of listed townhouses. Carefully aligned to the radial layout of the gardens, the houses are modestly proportioned, finished in natural stone, and feature clean, contemporary windows with aluminium louvre screens for privacy. Interiors are arranged for open-plan living, with direct access to private rear gardens and ample storage. Front gardens provide a measured buffer from the street, while flat green roofs support sustainable surface water management. Each home is highly insulated and designed for energy efficient, with air-source heat pumps, low-energy lighting, and high performance ventilation, demonstrating a careful balance of contemporary living, architectural refinement, and sustainability within a sensitive historic context.
